The Annual CognAC AI Symposium had its 17th edition this year. The prior edition of the
symposium was hosted at The Novio Tech Campus for the first time. For this edition we decided
to continue our contact with them, as we were very pleased with their hospitality before.
This year’s edition was based around the topic of AI in medicine. We invited speakers to talk
about various implementations of AI in this field and, through our contact with Novio Tech, were
able to organize a set of campus tours at some of the companies that had connections with the
topic. We had a professor from Delft University of Technology, who talked about the many
promising implementations of AI, and the hurdles to integrating them into clinical workflows.
Another speaker, who is a professor at UMC Utrecht, told us about a neural-network approach
to intraoperative diagnostics called sturgeon that he had worked on. A lecturer form the Open
University shared with us their insight on the importance of explainable AI, and the intricacies
that complicate the topic specifically in the world of healthcare.
During two of these talks groups of participants visited the on campus offices of MedIP
Analytics, and Novioscan, where they got tours of the workplace, and were told about how the
companies apply AI to improve healthcare.
Our keynote speaker this year was an author and professor from Leiden University who closed
off the day with a talk about the ethical considerations of using AI in medicine.
Attendees were very positive about the symposium, and we were pleased by the attendance.
We are also positive about the addition of campus tours, and are interested to see if we find
similar opportunities for future editions.
