Tomorrow, I will defend my dissertation at the Delft University of Technology.
I'll start with a presentation about my work at 14.30 and the defence will start at 15.00.

PhD defense scheduled

After 4 years, the project has come to an end. All the experiments have been conducted and the results have been submitted to international journals (see the publication list). The findings are also combined in a thesis which is being evaluated by the PhD committee as we speak. The public defence of this thesis will take place on October 28 at Delft University of Technology.

New intern project begins today!

Today, our new intern starts her project. During the course of her 6 months graduation project, she will be investigating the design of our feedbacksystem. What will be the most effective way of giving specific feedback to a user under stress? What auditive or visual factors should be noticed? These are some of the questions she will be answering with her project. We hope she will enjoy the project.

Symposium on Virtual Reality and Physiological Measurements for Training and Therapy

On Friday, May 16, 2014, TU Delft and VU Amsterdam will organize a symposium in Delft on "Virtual Reality and Physiological Measurements for Training and Therapy". A brief description is provided below. For more information, see https://www.hersenenencognitie.nl/contents/2382?locale=en.

Within academia, society and industry, currently much attention is paid to Virtual Reality and Physiological Measurements for Training and Therapy. To realize knowledge dissemination between these different parties, VU Amsterdam and TU Delft organize this symposium. The program will include plenary talks, demos, and parallel presentation sessions, all with the main aim to exchange scientific knowledge about the current state-of-the-art, tighten the cross-fertilization and collaboration between academia, industry and society, and promote and improve existing products.

Experiment at TNO finished last week

Last Friday was the last day of experimental sessions at TNO. Around 24 participants travelled to TNO in the last week to partake in this study. The main hypotheses of this experiment focused on differences in results between the feedback conditions. We implemented 3 types of feedback in the feedback system (bio/feedback, performance feedback and specific error feedback), and this experiment tested if scores on a stressful task varied when different feedback or combinations of feedback were given. Participants took the role of emergency workers in a ship where several fires occurred, which they had to extinguish. By asking the right questions, participants gathered information that was needed to decide what action was needed for that particular fire. Several stressors varied between conditions; time pressure, information uncertainty and having a colleague that could take over. During these tasks, different types of feedback, or a combination of feedback types were shown to the participants. Next to quantitative data, we also collected qualitative data to find out how people experienced the different feedback. The next months will be used to analyze the data and report the results in a paper.

Last experiment has started

The last experiment of the project has started last week. In this experiment, the Cognitive Feedback system will be tested in the virtual simulator at the Royal Dutch Navy College in Den Helder. Six simulator sessions are planned. The first three will be held this month, and the last three will be held at the end of August.
Data from this study will show us how the feedback system is working. The predicted feedback will be compared to the observed feedback and the user experiences will be tested. Testing the feedback system is the last step in this project and will result in the final chapter of the thesis.Last experiment has started
