The Lemon Car Game
You are invited to participate in a research study led by Charlotte M. Karam, PhD and Neil Yorke-Smith, PhD from American University of Beirut; Gert Jan Hofstede, Professor and Tim Verwaart, PhD from Delft University of Technology and Wageningen University and Research Centre; and Catholijn M. Jonker, Professor from Delft University of Technology.
Purpose of the study
Studying differences in negotiation behaviour across cultures is the purpose of this study. These specific behaviours include:
1. negotiating the price of the article between the seller and the buyer
2. negotiating whether the buyer trusts the seller
3. negotiating whether there is a third party check for defects.
The present study is part of research to explore whether different cultural backgrounds lead to differences in negotiating behaviour. These relationships will be explored by collecting data from two experiments: a face-to-face car selling game and a web-based version of the game.
Procedures
If you volunteer to participate in the web-based game, we would ask you to do the following things:
1. You will be asked to engage in a game of second hand car selling with another player over the internet.
2. You will choose either the role of the seller or the buyer.
3. You will be informed about moves of the other player and asked to respond.
4. You will be asked to specify the reasons for your move.
5. You will also be asked to answer demographic questions.
In total playing the game takes less than 10 minutes to complete.
Potential risks and discomforts
There is the possibility that you may feel a mild form of stress by the game condition of negotiating the car selling with another person.
Potential benefits to subjects and/or to society
The game-like nature of the study may be entertaining for participants.
The information collected from this research is useful in informing organizations about the negotiation strategies across cultures. Further, there will be an increase in knowledge about the buying behaviour of partners from different cultures thereby potentially benefiting traders across the world. Implications for training and cultural sensitivity in the work setting are also to be accrued from this study.
Confidentiality
Any information that is obtained in connection with this study and that can be identified with you will remain confidential and will be disclosed only with your permission. No one will be able to know which questionnaire responses are yours. Research data that is obtained from this study will be anonymous and not linked to your identity.
All data will be kept in secured files in accord with the standards at Delft University of Technology as well as the Institutional Research Board at the American University of Beirut. No personal or identifying information will be disclosed at any time or in any report or publication.
Participation and withdrawal
You can choose whether to be in this study or not. If you volunteer to be in this study, you may withdraw at any time without consequences of any kind. You may also refuse to answer any questions that you do not want to answer and still remain in the study. The investigator may withdraw you from this research if circumstances arise which so warrant.
Feedback of the results of this study to the subjects
Please feel free to contact us by email at lemoncargame@gmail.com for further information regarding the results.
Subsequent use of data
Data obtained from this study may be used in subsequent studies.
