Will an autonomously driving vehicle respond fast enough in unexpected and life-threatening situations? Doesn’t data communication and processing ‘in the cloud’ introduce too long delays? Local, ‘edge computing’ may speed things up in cases like this. On the other hand, you wouldn’t want to build a huge and energy-hungry computer in your vehicle. The new HYBRAIN project, coordinated by Professor Wilfred van der Wiel of the University of Twente and with partners from Oxford, Münster, Pisa and Zürich, is aimed at a computer system inspired by how our brain works. Ultrafast and highly energy-efficient.
